We’re Hiring! Opportunities at Different Career Levels
The Yang Lab at the University of Virginia School of Medicine is actively recruiting talented and motivated scientists at multiple career stages, including Assistant Professor of Research (non-tenure-track faculty), Research Scientist, Postdoctoral Fellow, PhD Student, and other research positions.
We welcome scientists who are intellectually curious, highly motivated, and excited to pursue innovative research in a collaborative and supportive environment.
Open Positions
1. Assistant Professor of Research (Non-Tenure-Track Faculty)
We are recruiting an Assistant Professor of Research to lead independent research projects within the Yang Lab. This is a non-tenure-track faculty position intended for an accomplished scientist with demonstrated research productivity, scientific independence, and the potential to establish an externally funded research program.
The successful candidate will be expected to develop independent research directions, supervise junior researchers, publish high-impact studies, and pursue extramural funding, including independent NIH research grants, with support from the PI and the laboratory.
Official position listing: Assistant Professor of Research – Apply via Interfolio
2. Research Scientist
We are seeking 1-3 Research Scientists with more than three years of postdoctoral research experience and a strong record of scientific productivity.
Ideal candidates will have expertise in structural biology, cryo-EM, protein biochemistry, molecular biology, or related disciplines. Research Scientists will lead challenging research projects, develop and optimize experimental approaches, contribute to manuscripts and grant proposals, and mentor junior laboratory members.
Official position listing: Research Scientist – UVA Careers
3. Postdoctoral Fellows
We are actively recruiting 1-3 Postdoctoral Fellows who are interested in investigating fundamental mechanisms of cellular stress signaling and pursuing innovative structural and mechanistic studies.
Candidates should hold a PhD (or expect to complete one soon) in biochemistry, biophysics, structural biology, molecular biology, cell biology, or a related field. Experience in cryo-EM, protein purification, biochemical reconstitution, or cellular signaling is particularly welcome. Applicants with complementary expertise and a strong interest in learning new techniques are also encouraged to apply.
Postdoctoral researchers will have opportunities to develop scientific independence, lead projects, publish their findings, and prepare for future academic or industry careers.
Official position listing: Postdoctoral Research Associate – UVA Careers
4. PhD Students
We welcome applications from prospective PhD students interested in structural biology, cellular stress responses, and mechanistic biomedical research.
Students can join the Yang Lab through the UVA Biomedical Sciences (BIMS) Graduate Program, including opportunities for direct admission to the Yang Lab, subject to program requirements and approval. Prospective applicants are strongly encouraged to contact the PI to discuss research interests, potential projects, and admission pathways.
5. Other Research Opportunities
We also welcome inquiries from visiting scholars, research assistants, and other motivated researchers interested in gaining hands-on research experience.
Opportunities depend on research interests, relevant experience, available funding, and laboratory capacity.
